About the Area
The Hotel is ideally situated in the Highlands of Scotland between two Scottish coastal towns Oban (22 miles) and Fort William (14 miles). Nearer to hand, the world famous village of Glencoe, made infamous by the highland massacre, is only four miles away. Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, is just the other side of Fort William and is walkable by most people taking the right precautions and preparations.
As well as walking or driving around enjoying the most breathtaking scenery in the world there are numerous interesting activities to pursue and attractions to visit.
Diving, Sailing, Fishing and Climbing Information
With the Hotel having its own private pier, it really is a huge attraction for divers. There is a well known reef close to the pier which is a favourite spot for visiting divers staying locally in Lochaber or Glencoe. We often have divers using the Pier and the ample car parking for a dive. Although we do not charge divers for using the pier we used to ask visiting divers to bring us something back from the murky deep! We ended up with such a collection of bottles and other nik naks we now do not ask.
Although neither Annette or Paul partake in the sport, numerous visiting divers talk enthusiastically about the diving.
The area is extremely popular for sailing and we often have cruising yachts stop off at the Hotel, for dinner or just "refreshments". We have visitors moorings which are free for diners in the bar or restaurant. Refreshing warm showers and use of the swimming pool and sauna are also available. Can you think of anything nicer than coming off a yacht after a few days hard sailing to a warm swim, sauna and then a slap up meal in the restaurant? We should always have space for visitors but if you want to give us a call to confirm please do so.
Lochaber Watersports offer yacht charter and are based in Ballachulish.
There is fishing allowed in on the pier at the Hotel as well as along the shoreline. The wide species available and abundance of sea life make the area a haven for sea water fishing. Locally there is also fresh water loch fishing available at Glencoe Lochan and various other lochs. Fishing trips and equipment can be organized by the Hotel.
With Lochaber being the outdoor capital of the Uk there is climbing in abundance in the local area. A good place to start is at the Internationaly renowned Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. This is an indoor climbing centre boasting the largest indoor ice wall in the World. Well worth a visit.
